Essay

Originally developed as a final degree project, the research pursued a method to integrate responsive and interactive architecture into a facade through soft robotics. It began with a conceptual review of adaptive architecture and soft robotics, followed by an analysis of recent work in the field.

Using computational design and programming tools, it explored a system of pneumatic cavities that deform the facade surface, continuously modulating light, shade and ventilation. The system's response is analog rather than mechanical: the skin changes shape with no visible rigid parts.

The outcome was a scalable physical prototype that integrates both approaches and demonstrates the viability of a facade that responds to environmental stimuli. The research was accepted and published at the SIGraDI 2022 conference and, after its diffusion, in Atena Editora's Journal of Engineering Research (2023).
